The software of the week: BleachBit – Toolinux

1. Overview

BleachBit is a software published under GPL, available for Windows systems and GNU / Linux, which can make room on the disk by cleaning unnecessary files. The first version dates from 2008. In addition to cleaning the system, it also runs many programs like Firefox, LibreOffice, Transmission, Java, Xchat and others. It is usually available in the official repositories of GNU / Linux distributions, but some also download it from the official website.

2. Interface

The interface is very simple. A button that allows you to do a test on the potential space savings and another that allows for cleaning. On the left, the system options were and the different software that can be analyzed, just click to choose what we want to clean up.

3. Operation

On Linux, you sometimes run the command line, using the” su ” in order to have the necessary rights, if not, it will tell you that some files were able to be cleaned. Also, be careful if you check all of Firefox or Thunderbird, you will lose your bookmarks and your saved passwords. Make sure the files it will remove to avoid losing important data.

In addition to make room by deleting the files, it can also delete files by re-writing it, in order to guarantee more security when their deletion. It can do the same with the space, but obviously this is much longer. It is also possible to shred files or free space.

4. Cleaning

Here is the result of a cleaning. You can see all deleted files, any error messages and disk space recovered.

BleachBit is a handy software. It cleanses the system of unnecessary files that clog and helps protect some privacy by deleting temporary files left by applications. Furthermore, the possibilities of re-writing or shredding the files or free space, are also practical (though other programs can do more efficiently). It is an essential software to have on hand.
