Facebook Chat is no longer functional in third-party software – Clubic

In turn, Facebook has decided to change its platform for instant messaging service. It is no longer possible to set up an account via third party software.

So far, Facebook Chat interfaces based on open source XMPP / Jabber. In practice this means that it was not only possible to use email on the Facebook site and through official mobile applications, but also to set its account on a type of software Pidgin, Trillian, Adium or Empathy. The company Mark Zuckerberg decided to end this support today Thursday, April 30.

fans service will thus initiate conversations on applications deployed by Facebook . For the record, Microsoft also removed the Facebook integration Skype and Outlook.com. For the community giant floor on developers must integrate their services directly in the Messenger platform. If on one hand it offers users a richer experience, so it breaks interoperability.

Facebook has not issued new API to set his account on an independent software and thus seems to want to control more its environment. Google also opted for a proprietary solution within Hangouts and closed the XMPP server GTalk inviting users to download Chrome and install the dedicated extension. Previously, when migrating Microsoft Windows Live Messenger to Skype accounts, interoperability with Yahoo! Messenger was withdrawn

These strategies came as the IM WebRTC standard is about to be validated . For the record, WebRTC proposes to conduct exchanges text, audio and video within the browser without plug. Chrome, Firefox and Opera are already compatible and the Mozilla Foundation recently unveiled Hello functionality with the aim to offer a truly universal messaging. One imagines that Hello will be then focused on mobile platforms.
