New compilation of free software for Windows – LinuxFr

A new compilation of free software for Windows is available for free and unrestricted download. More than 60 free software were selected following criteria:

  • functional richness;
  • license (s) open (s), preferably copyleft;
  • Software available for both Windows and GNU / Linux, to facilitate the transition from Windows to GNU / Linux
  • active development;

The software is distributed with an installer that allows:

  • to display the list of software, sorted by category or alphabetically;
  • to display the description of each program;
  • to copy or install software on every computer, following the installation instructions
  • check the website of each software;
  • to view or copy the documents on his computer.

Before being added to the compilation, each software has been installed on several original and updated versions of Windows in VirtualBox. This helped to check dependencies (Ghostscript, Visual C ++ 2008/2010/2012/2013/2015, Java, .NET 3.0 / 3.5 / 4.0 …) in 32 or 64 bits, to choose the installation settings (disabling installing unwanted third party programs), check the proper functioning of the software and know the necessary settings before use (choice of language for example). All this information is added to the installation instructions, ensuring successful installation and saves a lot of time. This compilation is updated regularly and guarantees to use the official versions of software.

This compilation was made with the COMPILIBRE software. You can download COMPILIBRE to make your own software compilation. The database that was used for the compilation of free software for Windows is included in COMPILIBRE, with comments on the hundreds of programs that have been tested, selected or unselected noted for upcoming trials.
You can participate in improving the COMPILIBRE software (programming, graphic design, translations …). You can support the COMPILIBRE project by making a donation, you will receive more technical support on http://www.numopen.fr/discussions/t/compilibre.
