Free software, a response to the digital transformation? – ZDNet France

On the occasion of the Open Source Summit Paris event, dedicated to free software and Open Source, CAP firm conducted a study on behalf of CNLL (National Council of Free Software) and Syntec Numérique.

And according to the results of the study (with a panel of 100 respondents), this type of software (and related services) in France recorded a strong and rapid growth. According to PAC, the Free should represent in 2015 a turnover of 4.1 billion euros

Free (software and services). EUR 6 billion in 2020

And with average growth estimated at 9% per year, it will tend to EUR 6 billion in 2020, representing 13% of the French market for software and services. The free will have reached a very significant size in 2012 when he weighed only 5% of this market.

Why this interest? To believe the results of the study, free software provides a direct response to the digital transformation of enterprises. CAP thus saith solutions constitute “recognized levers to support the necessary development of companies that must meet the challenges of the digital age.”

And if the use of free applications from progressing, it is especially because it sticks to trends “most promising” including cloud computing and digital transformation. It should therefore also add Big Data. In these key areas, many of the technologies deployed are indeed open source, such as Hadoop and OpenStack (or Linux as the OS in virtual machines.) – Not to mention databases

Free software in the heart of the digital transformation

According to CAP, the areas where free software develops most are thus currently the SI / applications (58%), followed by infrastructure there a constant (45%) and the cloud (39%). These growth areas, however, should evolve over the next five years with a stronger focus on Big Data / Analytics (56% versus 36% in 2015) and mobility (45% vs 36%) and less on infra and the back office where the Libre is often already present.

However, if the French players want to support this growth, they will probably gain size, including the software development side. From the study, it appears that French companies are small (65% employ fewer than 10 people to the software), and 73% is first defined as a service company.

In fact 78% of respondents say they use free software to “enrich” their “service offerings with tools and software framework”. For comparison, they are 48% motivate this choice by the desire to “develop a publisher purely business.” Is it surprising, however? No, because the model in this market is to pay through the services and not by selling software

Open Source:. A “must do”

The importance of free software and its contribution as part of the transformation of the company, Yves Caseau defended precisely at the conference XebiCon early November . Former CIO of Bouygues Telecom and now head of digital at Axa qualified and practices of the open source “must do” to improve software quality and meet the agility and innovation needs.

“What is important is to realize that if we ignore this treasure [Editor's note: Open Source code], we really misses opportunities and we become especially much too slow and ineffective “he said.

In addition, another advantage, “the core technologies of tomorrow, the AI, the machine learning, these things, they are accessible to everyone [...] For 99% of the needs businesses, the right software for the semantic web, natural language, etc., code already exists and is simple to use, “explained Yves Caseau yet.
