Toshiba has unveiled a new technology that is expected to increase the quality of photos taken with a smartphone with a Toshiba sensor, such as the HTC One last M9. A technology already used in other types of sensors and not revolutionary
Smartphones using a Toshiba sensor should in the future, offer better image quality. The Japanese giant has published on its website a description of a technology that should be used in the future in the accompanying ISP brand sensors. This is to provide better quality shots without changing the sensor. For this, Toshiba builds on what is currently in the competition, particularly with some of its Sony Alpha cameras. The idea is to make several shots in a row to the combine and reduce digital noise in low light situations, while increasing the quality of photos.
Toshiba not specify the number of photos taken, but still incorporates a digital stabilization mechanism to avoid ending up with a final image integrating artifacts due to too shaky hand for example. This technique would also create the final image incrementally, retaining each taken only the necessary information. This allows, according to Toshiba, using roughly the same amount of memory in a scenario where the algorithm would be disabled.
All the processing is performed from the ISP accompanying the sensor. It would be interesting to know whether Toshiba plans to use the smartphone accelerometer to detect tremors in order to offer a better digital stabilization. This new technology should help to maintain proper image quality without necessarily integrating larger sensors . Finally, one may wonder if Toshiba has developed this technology internally or if it comes from the acquisition of a company and its patent and if a patent war is expected in the world the photo.
For those who would take advantage of such functionality on their smartphone, there are already applications that perform this type of processing in software , with the power of the CPU. This is for example the case of ProCapture app on Android. If you know of others, please know in the comments.
