Open source is becoming more and more in France. While it was barely emerging fifteen years ago, this market now worth EUR 4.1 billion, an increase of 33% compared to 2012, according to a study by Pierre Audoin Consultants the National Council of Free Software (CNLL) and Syntec Numérique, on the occasion of the first edition of Paris Open Source Summit held until Thursday. Certainly, we are still far from the weight of North America, which dominates this market, the major players Apple, Google, Facebook and Microsoft have invested more free software. But in France, the growth momentum is real.
The study projects as well as the weight of free software should aim to 6 billion in 2020 in the hexagon, the market, aspiring to grow about 9% per year . It would then represent 13% of the French market software and services, against 5% in 2012. A growth rate significantly higher than that of the IT (information technology), which is between 2 and 3% on average each year. “ Open source is a new market and not at all an alternative market as it was considered before, so we enter a second phase ,” says Philippe Montarges, co-chair of CNLL and founder of Alter Way.
Facilitator innovations
The widespread successes of technologies like Linux, major publishers cloud ( OpenStack) or the development of the Internet of Things grow this growth. Today, open source affects all sectors: cloud analytics, big data, mobility, applications … “ Imposing interoperable standards, open source is a great innovation facilitator , “says Philippe Montarges. Half the players in the open source already investing more than 15% of their turnover in research and development (R & amp; D). R & amp; D is the DNA of these open source companies, which have specialized able to offer a faster operational service offering than those of proprietary software companies.
This growth means hiring: the annual rate of net job creation in open source, which today employs 50,000 employees, is between 3,000 and 4,000 positions. The sector creates new jobs in SMEs, ETI and startups. 76% of companies surveyed plan to increase their workforce by 20% by 2020. These are primarily software developers positions, consultants project managers, or in the administration, the new digital professions.
Although in full swing, in France, the sector is mainly composed of small companies. 66% of players with fewer than 10 employees. France has its champions as well Talend or BonitaSoft but remains far behind the United States.
