The last three years, the weight of the free has changed scale in France, from 5% of the software industry and IT services, to 13%. And growth will continue.

The free software is growing. On the occasion of the Paris Open Source Summit, held in the capital until November 19, Pierre Audoin Consultants published a study for the National Council of Free Software (CNLL) and Syntec Numérique, where he shows that this market weighs 4.1 billion euros today. This is a third more than in 2012. Within five years, it would reach 6 billion euros.

In three years, the weight of the free software and services segment IT in France increased from 5-13%. Another strong trend: open source vendors are distinguished from the rest of the market by their significant investment effort in research and development: 51% spend indeed more than 15% of their turnover on these expenses, against 11% . average for other European publishers

Central to this growth and these investments, there are the technologies of cloud – OpenStack software stack for example – and the Internet of Things. While Linux propels 97% of the Top 500 supercomputer ranking, several manufacturers (Cray, Fujitsu, Intel …) this week announced the creation of OpenHPC project, in order to create a framework that support open source in this environment.

The French free software sector employs 50,000 people. It consists to 66% of TPE under 10 employees. Over the next five years, three quarters of respondents think players increase their workforce by 20%, bringing the net job creation in 3500 jobs per year on average. The most sought-after profiles will concern software developer positions or consultants project managers
