Earlier this year, Lenovo had to apologize profusely due to its preinstallation on computers adware, also having a significant security risk. The manufacturer then promised to deliver PC now without unnecessary apps or “bloatware”.
However, the company’s own software obviously not fall into the category. And Lenovo is making significant efforts to ensure that its tools are installed with Windows, even if the user makes a new OS installation
If the problem had been identified in May, he mainly talked about for the past few days. Lenovo has an application: Lenovo Service Engine (LSE). This allows you to install an additional program providing drivers updates, firmware and other preinstalled apps.
But then, LSE is inspired, in its method of a rootkit. The engine is the Lenovo BIOS and replaces a Windows kernel file to allow downloading files once the machine connected to the Internet.
Unfortunately for Lenovo and its customers, this component software presents a security risk. The manufacturer issued a Safety Alert on July 31, recognizing a risk of exploitation by hackers. The LSE use can indeed be abused to install malware.
Lenovo has released a patch removing this feature. However, users should download and install it manually. The flaw affects different PC models and Yoga Flex ranges in Windows 7, 8 and 8.1. This is however not the case of PC Think.
