A bug in a software FAA did cancel 476 flights in the United States – Digital Factory

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the American equivalent of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), communicated on August 17 on a problem that occurred Saturday 15 during a software update. A bug present in the code of a new feature has caused blackouts throughout the Washington DC area Only 70% to 88% of the traffic could be ensured in the affected airports, resulting in 476 492 canceled flights and delayed flights.

The functionality in question, developed by Lockheed Martin, is designed to assist controllers to customize a window displaying the most frequently used data. It is part of ERAM air traffic control system (En Route Automation Modernization), deployed earlier this year on the whole territory.

The FAA has disabled the function for now and works with Lockheed to resolution, and to determine how the bug was able to escape their vigilance.
