Stephen Hawking. The software that allows him to speak is open … – Ouest-France

The ACAT software (Context-Aware Assistive Toolkit / Translate: toolkit to help raise awareness of its environment) allows for several years American scientist Stephen Hawking, who suffers from a form of sclerosis and paralysis, speak with a robotic voice recognizable among thousands.

A hope for paralyzed

This software requires very little movement on the part of the paralyzed person, since it does not click on the letters of a keyboard but just looking at them. A facial recognition system does the rest.

The Intel media manufacturer, who participated in the creation of this tool has recently taken the decision to open this unique opportunity of communication to the greatest number, allowing the spread of open source software. It is currently only available on Windows, but this should attract developers. To them then to generalize this technique, and into application and give hope to thousands of paralyzed cloistered in their silence.
