F-35: a software bug cloudy vision pilots during flights … – The Digital Factory

A software bug causes a blurred vision of the target when the fighter F-35 flying in formation, reports Defense Tech. A problem that will not hinder the deployment of current devices in 2015.

A software problem has been detected by the engineers of the US military program “Joint Strike Fighter” in the vision system of fighter aircraft F-35 when flying in formation, reports Defense Tech.

Instead of merging into one clear image data from the sensors of each aircraft (the same for each device), the system returns to the equivalent pilot double vision. This poses a big problem in a target detection: the driver can not determine if it is a single or multiple threat. But the vision system has been developed to allow pilots training to have a clear picture of their target, regardless of viewing angle.

Flying in pairs and disable sensors

To remedy this problem, engineers, naval experts and members of the R & amp laboratory; D Johns Hopkins University are working on the sensitivity of software fusion algorithms for pilots of F-35 training to properly identify and discern threats.

According to Chris Bogdan, head of the F-35 program at the US Department of Defense, the problem does not hamper the deployment of F-35B planned for June 2015. The drivers will be able to work around the problem, for example by flying in pairs rather than fleet of four … or disabling certain sensors.
