Ian Murdock, great figure of the free software is dead – Begeek.fr

Ian Murdock was born April 28, 1973 in West Germany, he died Monday, December 28 at the age of 42 years. Founder of the Debian project and advocate of free software, he worked for Sun Microsystems from 2007 to 2010, then for Salesforce Marketing Cloud from 2011 to 2015 and more recently for Docker November to 28 December 2015. He was also CEO Free Standards Group and president of Linux Working Group Standards Base.

The circumstances of his death are not yet clear but it had posted a tweet announcing his decision to end these days just hours before his death. For some, his account had been hacked. The suicide of the track still seems difficult to remove since in many tweets he also referred to police violence which he suffered.

The American police are often pointed at for its repeated acts of violence, in 2015 it would have killed over 700 people. Ian Murdock had probably wanted to draw public attention to this subject, he posted a series of tweets including this one: “ Maybe my suicide, that of a businessman recognized not a NEGRO, draw a little attention to this very serious problem . “

The community pays tribute to Ian Murdock

Ian Murdock is the founder of the Debian project , a community organization whose purpose is to develop operating systems based only on free software. The Debian team wanted to pay their last respects by posting the following message on her blog:

Ian had focused on creating a distribution and a culture of community who take the right decisions both from the ethical point of view and from a technical perspective. Post only when it’s ready and firm position of the project on software freedom are the golden rules in the world of free software and open source. Attachment to do well Ian guided his work as well as Debian in the following years, always working for the best possible future. The dream of Ian continues, the Debian community remains incredibly active, with thousands of developers working countless hours to offer the world a stable and secure operating system.
