There was a time where one could believe that a photo showed the reality. Then came Photoshop and faked pictures invaded the world. We’re not there yet with the video, but it comes close as shown in the Face2Face project of US and German academics.
Researchers from the American University of Stanford , in collaboration with the German University of Erlangen-Nuremberg teams and the Max Planck Institute in Leipzig, working to effect change in real time facial expressions.
Basically, they use facial expressions they apply to another. Here, the expressions of an actor captured by a simple webcam are applied on the face of George Bush, Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump in videos taken from YouTube.
Making say n ‘anything to anyone
to achieve this, the researchers created software that analyzes in real time the original video source and reconstructs a 3D model of the face. It performs the same operation from the face of the actor who will perform the facial expressions. Finally an algorithm utilizing a photometric approach for better coherence between the two models, reconstitutes the movements of the mouth, eyes and eyebrows to apply to the first face. There is more than add a voice recording and we can do to say anything to anyone without that it shows.
If the result is astonishing is not not perfect yet, but researchers have not yet completed their work. One day he will watch videos with a very critical eye to detect the true from the false
.
